Hi, I’m Dr. PJ.
I’m Dr. PJ, a board-certified obstetric anesthesiologist. I’m originally from San Francisco and now live in San Diego, after practicing mostly in the Northeast.
Before becoming a doctor, I worked as a medical assistant in a gynecology clinic and always knew I wanted my career to focus on caring for people during pregnancy and childbirth. I was drawn to obstetric anesthesia because it allows me to care for people during a joyful, though sometimes stressful, moment in their lives.
Teaching has also been an important part of my life. I was a teacher before becoming a doctor, and my current work brings together two things I love: caring for patients and helping others learn. I’ve taught anesthesiology residents using games and other innovative ways to learn. But most importantly, I push them to be the best doctors they can be and to provide the care they’d want for their own family members. I bring that same enthusiasm to AskDrPJ—answering your questions and helping you understand the choices in your birth plan.
And yes, I’ve had an epidural!
What’s an obstetric anesthesiologist?
An obstetric anesthesiologist is a physician who specializes in pain relief during labor and delivery. They work closely with your obstetrician, midwife, and/or doula to take care of you and your baby during and immediately after your delivery.
